Day 14 - Jim Corbett National Park (second day)

13.10.2022

Day 14

Jim Corbett National park is a wildlife sanctuary in Uttarakhand state. The park is named after Edward James Corbett, major in the British Army, who was also hunter, tracker, naturalist and author of “Man eaters of Kumaon” and who hunted a number of man-eating tigers and leopards in Indian subcontinent.

We planned two safaris during our two days (and three nights) stay here - one each during morning and afternoon. Today’s safari was at 2.30 pm in a Maruti Gypsy, which can carry six people plus the guide and driver. The weather was good and the drive to reserve forest is about 25 kms.

We had a fairly good safari today - though no tiger sighting (yet). Maybe we came close to seeing one as we saw barking deers (they bark when frightened by a predator) which we saw at handshaking distance and fresh tiger pug marks. We saw a she elephant and calf crossing our path (or did we cross hers?). There were plenty of spotted deers and few antlers, langurs and a variety of birds - peacocks, fowls, Kingfisher, Hawk Eagle - and Indian gray mongoose.

The park has more than 250 tigers, which is the highest in the world and we hope to have better luck tomorrow.

Other than the safari, today was mostly rest and rejuvenate for the days ahead on the road. After a heavy buffet breakfast we decided to look after our personal things - but then “Panchali” needed a body wash and clean the inside - this was taken care of.

In fourteen days we have covered eight states - TN, Andhra, Orissa, Jharkhand, UP, MP, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Union territory of Pondicherry. So far we have kept to our schedule.

At end of day fourteen- 5205 kms (no change as we are now inside the resort) on our tracker.
